Bordeaux’s signature grape varieties have traversed the globe, to the extent that Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot have risen in the past two decades to be the most widely planted varieties in the world & a typical ‘Bordeaux blend’ usually combines two or more of the classic Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Carmenère & Malbec.

From Tuscany’s coast to the gravel soils of Hawke’s Bay in New Zealand winemakers now make some excellent examples using these varieties but it’s not as if they are seeking to make carbon copies of Bordeaux wines & climate, as well as vineyard & cellar techniques differ within & between regions to produce unique wines. There is however a certain sense of paying homage to what Bordeaux has achieved in winemaking terms, with the existence of Bordeaux blends, even as a term in itself, underlining the French region’s enduring position as a benchmark for fine wines.

It also says something about the versatility of the grapes themselves & there are some excellent examples of New World ‘Bordeaux Blends’ out there so for this tasting we will be pitting three Bordeaux wines against three New World equivalents so you can be the judge of which your prefer!

As always with our tastings this will be a pretty informal affair with the emphasis on enjoyment of the evening & trying something new. We will be serving nibbles to go along with the wines & discounts will be offered on the night for any orders/purchases made.
