Notes: Named in tribute to the Ladybirds that combat the presence of the mealybug & protect the vines, they used to be bought & released by the winery, but now after 14 years, the cycle goes naturally & there are enough around. These little creatures are a remarkable deterrent & avoid the need for the use of pesticides to eradicate pests.
The Ladybird Red Blend wine is an organic Bordeaux influenced blend, & has a complex nose with hints of spice, chocolate & mocha. Good structure with plum & mineral complexity & a long lingering finish. Showing graceful elegance, this wine over delivers on quality & showcases this estate as one of the leading lights in South Africa.
Producer Info: One of the Cape`s more recent wine estates having been purchased by the Laibach Kuehner family in the early 1990s. An initial investment saw the 40 hectare property totally replanted & this was followed by the building of a state of the art & contemporary winery. Stuffed full of modern winemaking kit but using traditional barrel ageing, this is a wine estate with a growing reputation right on top of its game. Managed by the very likeable Mike Malherbe, a totally fanatical grape grower & in tandem with the exceptionally talented winemaker, Francois van Zyl they endeavour to craft modern drinkable & delicious wines. The first winery in South Africa to convert to organic viticulture in the early 2000s.
