Dão is one of the oldest established wine regions of Portugal, located just south of the famous Douro Valley. The mountainous region is home to Touriga Nacional, the principle variety of port wine, among many others. The region takes its name from the Dão river, a tributary of the larger Mondego river & this is where the majority of the region`s vineyards are located.

Producer Info: Adega de Penalva do Castelo is a Dao winery revived by Abegoaria, the winemaking project of the Bio family. Originally from Alentejo, Ana & Manuel Bio have invested in Portugal’s wine heritage; modernising facilities, & revitalising wineries in historic wine regions. Penalva`s Dao is made using traditional grape varieties grown on the region’s rugged granitic terrain by local farmers in the district of Castendo. The protection of the Serra da Estrela & location at 500m altitude creates a generous microclimate & distinguished wines.
